Pop quiz: What do the following kids’ shows have in common?: Blue’s Room, Go, Diego, Go!, The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, She-Ra: Princess of Power, The Fairly OddParents, and Pinky and the Brain?
Each of these kids’ shows is a spin-off of a successful counterpart.
Following their lead, Nugget Island-favorite Yo Gabba Gabba has an unofficial spin-off in the works. Head of animation at Yo Gabba Gabba, Parker Jacobs is hoping to bring his own Goon Holler property, often seen during the YGG Story Time segments, to the small screen.
Coming out of Yo Gabba Gabba production house The Magic Store, the show is currently in concept form, with a few sample “Goon toons” ready. Targeting an older audience of kids 6-to-11, Goon Holler will be a mix of live action and animation. According to the creators it will be a throwback to series like The Mickey Mouse Club or Howdy Doody where Goon Holler cartoons are screened in front of an in-studio kid audience. The audience will also participate in games, sing-alongs and guest star interactions.
The show itself will be a standard 22-minute format, including 5 minute animated shorts. The shorts will focus on the fictional backwoods state of Burgertucky and its new inhabitants, the Goons. When bumbling wizard Theodore Wiznat accidentally brings the strange creatures to life as pets for his nephew, more of them arrive and a new community called “Good Holler” emerges. The ‘Holler’ is filled with magical dragons, silliness, slapstick, and we can assume, important lessons.
Artist/creator Parker Jacobs dreamed up this property when he was drawing bedtime stories for his daughter. Although the show has not landed a TV deal just yet, Jacobs already sells must-have Goon Holler merchandise online. In the meantime, while we wait for the show to make its way into our living rooms, check out some additional artwork below, as well as some Goon toons from Yo Gabba Gabba Story Time.
